A Made-to-Measure Outdoor Illumination
In the city of Ludinghausen three castles form a unique monument landscape with high tourist appeal. The Castle Ludinghausen, built in the 12th century and rebuilt as a typical Renaissance castle in the 16th century, is today used as a social-cultural centre for exhibitions, seminars and Council meetings. The lighting concept of the “Burgfreunde” society was financed by donations from the “Sparkassen Finanzgruppe Kreis Coesfeld”. “RWE Rheinland Westfalen Netz” sponsored the necessary connection to the street lighting electricity network and the installation of three light poles. The technical implementation was made by “Gedike & Dopper Elektrogesellschaft mbH”.
Technology
The historic façade is not illuminated with watts-hungry wall washers, but with modern projection technology. Four GL 150-A projectors from German projection specialist Derksen Lichttechnik are used with a total capacity of 600 watts. The projectors beam the light with sharp contours on the façade so that neither the interior nor the roof is illuminated. Technical basis is an exact template of the building, a gobo, which is placed into the projectors light beam, so that only the previously defined areas are covered with light. The gobos were accurately calculated using digital photos of the Castle Ludinghausen. Point of view related distortions of the projected image were adjusted mathematically.
Ecology and Economy
This lighting concept is so efficient that according to a calculation of the owner, daily energy costs vary between 2.50 € in winter and 1.20 € in summer. Through the crisp, matching projection, the natural environment of the castle is far less burdened with light pollution. This is especially important for the protection of nocturnal insects. That the avoidance of undirected light emission is playing an increasing role in outdoor lighting can be seen, for example in the nature conservation recommendation of North Rhine-Westphalia.
